The Problems:

Can an individual drive safely and independently after injury or illness?

Are there any doubts or concerns about the abilities of a patient or family member to safely operate a motor vehicle?

Has the State revoked an individual's driver's license because of a permanent disability?

Does an individual require special adaptive equipment or adaptive alterations made to their vehicle so that they can drive safely?

The Service:

In addition to assessment of visual abilities, physical strengths and reaction times, a Drivers Evaluation consists of actual behind the wheel testing of all aspects of the driving task in all types of traffic.

Evaluation to determine if any adaptive technology is indicated and to ensure the correct equipment is obtained.

Evaluation and training in the proper operation of vehicle with adaptive technology to eliminate the risk of having an accident.

Training or co-piloting is utilized to re-teach individuals how to drive safely and responsibly.

The Outcome:

The Drivers Rehabilitation Program provides objective testing of driving ability and recommendations for necessary training and/or accommodations to return to safe driving.

Most patients can return to driving with the proper training and equipment regardless of diagnosis.

A Drivers Rehab Specialist can provide invaluable feedback for physicians to make the final determination on a patients driving future. Without the assistance of a CDRS; determining a patients ability to drive from diagnosis alone can be a very difficult choice.

Return to, or continue to, drive safely and independently with appropriate adaptive equipment, training and vehicle selection
