OSTEOPOROSIS - ARE YOU AT RISK?
By Tracy Cobb, R.P.T.

Osteoporosis is defined as a reduction in bone mass to the point that bones became fragile. This can lead to fractured hips, wrists or crushed vertebras. Osteopenia is the precursor to Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is prevalent in the United States and in other countries as well. Currently, 28 million Americans are affected and 80% are women. There are 10 million Americans who have Osteoporosis and 18 million more have Osteopenia. One out of two women and one out of eight men will have an Osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. More than 2 million men have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can strike at any age. The estimated national direct expenditure is $14 billion each year.
These are staggering figures and warrant further attention. Request a bone density test to determine if you do have Osteoporosis or if you are at risk for it and discuss results with your physician. The prevention and management of Osteoporosis involves attention to nutrition, possible use of medication and physical exercise.

Physical therapists are actively involved in working with people who have Osteoporosis or are at risk for it. Physical therapy emphasizes three important components that include strengthening and stretching exercises, balance training and body mechanics training.

·Exercises emphasize strengthening back muscles as well as stretching areas to improve postural alignment.

·Balance training works on improving sitting and standing balance in order to reduce the risk for falls.

·Body mechanics training is important to reduce stress on your spine while performing normal daily activities.
Be aware and be proactive! Much can be done to prevent and treat Osteoporosis but you must take action as soon as possible!
